One server replaces five subscriptions
A single 2 vCPU / 4 GB server running Docker comfortably hosts Nextcloud (files and calendar), Vaultwarden (passwords), Uptime Kuma (monitoring), a Matrix or XMPP server for messaging and an RSS reader - your personal cloud for a few dollars a month.
Self-hosting gives you something subscriptions can't: your password manager and files live on a server you control, and nobody else's terms decide what happens to them.
The boring parts that matter
Put everything behind a reverse proxy (Caddy gives you automatic HTTPS in four lines), back up volumes off-server, and enable unattended security updates. An hour of setup buys years of quiet operation.
The practical starting points: the first ten minutes on a fresh VPS, running several containers on one box, and backups that actually restore, which is the one people skip and regret.
