What is reverse DNS for?

It maps your IPv4 back to a hostname. Mail servers check it, and a missing or generic record is one of the reasons outbound mail lands in spam.

Does renaming a server change anything technical?

No. The label is ours, for finding the machine in the panel. The hostname inside the server is separate and set at deployment.

Is a reboot from the panel the same as `reboot` over SSH?

Close enough for normal use. The panel sends the provider's reboot, which is what you want when the machine is unresponsive and SSH is not answering.

Which of these work on every provider?

Reverse DNS (PTR)

Point a PTR record for your server's IPv4 at a hostname. This matters most if you run a mail server, many receivers reject or downrank mail from an IP without a matching reverse DNS record. Set it from the dashboard in seconds (just make sure a forward A record exists first). Available on Vultr, Linode and Hetzner servers. DigitalOcean derives the PTR from the droplet name and has no separate API for it, so we don't offer the field there.
