Hosting a Tor relay or bridge on an anonymous VPS
Run a Tor middle relay or obfs4 bridge paid with Bitcoin. What's allowed, how to set it up, and why exits are different.
Relays and bridges: welcome
Tor middle relays and bridges strengthen the network and carry only encrypted traffic between Tor nodes — they are explicitly allowed here and run trouble-free. A 1 vCPU / 2 GB plan pushes respectable bandwidth for the cause.
Paying for the relay with crypto keeps your contribution to internet freedom consistent with its purpose: no billing trail connecting you to the node.
Exit nodes: read this first
Exit relays route other people's traffic to the open internet under your server's IP — which means the abuse reports for that traffic land on you. Exits require our explicit approval first; unsanctioned exits get treated like any other source of abuse complaints. Contact us before flipping the exit flag.
Setup
Install the tor package, set nickname, bandwidth limits and the relay flag in torrc, and watch your node appear in the consensus within hours. Security basics apply: SSH keys, automatic updates, nothing else running on the box.
